Traveling in Hong Kong

If you are traveling to Hong Kong any time in the near future you may be wondering how you will get around. Worry no more, Hong Kong has some awesome public transportation that you can take advantage of.

Back in 1997, the Octopus Card became available. This card makes using public transportation easy and simple. No need to have cash on hand, the Octopus Card makes moving around the country a joy. Consider that there are over 10 million cards in use and only 7 million people living in Hong Kong.

An Octopus Card may be purchased at any public transportation center for $50US/$150HK. This one card will allow you to travel most public transportation and can also be used in many convenience stores and restaurants. Keep your card topped off and you will have no problem traveling the country.

Hong Kong has over 236 islands, so if you are worried about island to island travel, don’t. Ferries are in place to make this possible, most have departures happening every 10 minutes.

Trams are another favorite form of transportation on the main islands. Trams have been around since 1904, similar to a trolley, they are slow paced. This is perfect for those who are hoping to experience and see life in Hong Kong. This mode of transportation is also cheap, $2HK for an adult.

Buses are all over the island. They are fast and come frequently, so you can get to where you need to go quickly. The bus service is 24 hours a day, which is convenient. Most buses are also air-conditioned for your comfort.

Taxis are also available and can be paid for with your Octopus card.

Boasting one of the most excellent and simplistic public systems in the world getting around in Hong Kong should be the least of your worries. Just remember to keep your Octopus Card topped off.
