Before visiting a foreign country it’s important to familiarize yourself with its customs so that you don’t risk offending your hosts or getting yourself into trouble. This is especially the case when traveling to the city of Hong Kong. Although it is tentatively considered a separate territory from the rest of China, and thus freer and more open, many of its residents practice the same discipline and rite of honor seen in the rest of the country. Tourists then need to be aware of their behavior and act with proper etiquette.
Interacting
Hong Kong is a city a that values respect, so visitors should be mindful in how they introduce themselves to people for the first time. Like in the West, a handshake is a common way to greet, but it is done lightly rather than with a strong grip seen in most of America. The eyes should be lowered upon greeting someone as a respectful gesture. The person you are meeting will provide the name in which they would like to be addressed, but prior to, they should be addressed by their proper surname.
Eating
One would think that Hong Kong culture would have a variety of table manners to adhere to, but that isn’t the case. Food is generally passed around on a tray and visitors should be encouraged to try everything served. Interestingly, burping isn’t seen as a rude gesture, although it should be done within reason. Like traditional American meals, diners should wait for the host to start eating and the host should be the first to give a toast. Chopsticks should always be placed on the table from where they came.
Cleanliness
Acting respectful in Hong Kong also means respecting property. Littering is considered major offense and can result in a major fine or being detained by police. Disposing of gum should even be done properly by wrapping it in its wrapper before placing it in a waste basket.
If tourists follow Hong Kong’s simple customs they’ll be treated like locals in no time.
