Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. It is situated on the south coast of China and surrounded by the South China Sea on one side and by the Pearl River Delta on the other. It is one of the most densely populated places on earth. Hong Kong had a troubled beginning. It was under British occupation and also briefly controlled by the Japanese. Hong Kong was in British control until 1997. This is the reason why Hong Kong has a ‘East meets West’ culture. It is the home to some of the world’s most breath-taking architectural monuments. The language used in here is Cantonese, although English is the official language. Buddhism is the main religion; Confucianism and Taoism have large followers too. Christianity is also practiced, with about 8% of the population being practicing Christians. Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism have some followers here. Until 2009, the education system of Hong Kong was largely modeled on the British education system. Now, education is imparted in both English and mother tongue.
