TRANSPORT

Container Port | International Airport

Strategically located at the centre of East Asia, Hong Kong's eminence as a financial, communications and trade centre is rooted in its pre-eminence as a port, which has by now become the world's busiest container port handling more than 11 million TEUs annually.

This throughput is forecasted to triple to 32 million TEUs by the year 2011 and plan is already on hand to build a completely new container port on Lantau Island with twice the present capacity.

Building the new port is vital not only for Hong Kong but for southern China as more 60% of all cargo passing through Hong Kongís port is bound to, or from, China.

In addition, Hong Kong's externally-oriented economy depends greatly on modern, efficient and expanding air transport for its continued growth.

As the existing international airport at Kai Tak is already operating near its capacity, a new airport is being built at Chek Lap Kok which is capable of handling 35 million passengers and three million tonnes of air cargo annually.
