Of the 11 million containers loaded and discharged in Hong Kong annually, about 66% were handled at the Kwai Chung Container Port, which has 8 terminals.Planing for the construction of Container Terminal 9, at Southeast Tsing Yi, is at an advanced stage, and preliminary design work is underway for Container Terminals 10 and 11, to be located at west Lantau.
Like the existing container port, all the new terminals will be financed, built and operated by private enterprise.
Terminal 10 and 11 together can provide 17 berths between 1997 and 2011. Each berth will have a 320-metre quay with a terminal area of about 20 hectares and will be supported by 10 hectares of off-terminal backup land. This configuration will accommodate post-Panamax vessels and provide a storage area to cater for an annual throughput of at least 400,000 TEUs.
The backup area will be used for container storage, repair and refurbishment as well as godowns, container freight storage facilities and lorry and trailer parking.
The water depth alongside each berth will be 14.65 metres with the potential for deepening into 15.65 metres if necessary.
Four Phases of Development:
Phase I (Year 1997 - Year 2000):
Developers will build container berths (Terminal 10) next to Pennyís Bay.Phase II (Year 2000 - Year 2003):
A further four berths are to be built (Terminal 11) with associated backup areas behind the berths.Phase III (Year 2003 - Year 2007):
The first section of four north-facing berths will be built on a central island. Backup areas will be to the north of the Phase II berths.Phase IV (Year 2007 - Year 2011):
Two north-facing berths will be built on the central island to complete the north basin. A further three berths will be built on the south face.
