Free Flow of Capital/Foreign Exchange | The Gold Market

After Japan, Hong Kongís stock market is the second largest in Asia. Some 540 public companies are listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. With a total market capitalisation of some US$290 billion, the Hong Kong stock market also ranks eighth in the world.

The listing of many state-owned enterprises of the Peopleís Republic of China on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong represents one of the most important market development initiatives in recent years. Since 1993, more than 15 enterprises have listed in Hong Kong, altogether raising some US$2.3 billion of capital.

In addition to new share issues, funds can also be tapped through rights issues and private placements.

The Hong Kong Futures Exchange introduced the Hang Seng Index options in March 1993. It also offers future contracts in the Hang Seng Index and Sub-Indices, interbank interest rates and gold.

The securities and future industries are scrutinised by the Securities and Futures Commission set up by the Hong Kong Government in May 1989.
