Getting Around Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the most crowded cities in the world as it boasts a population over seven million and covers an area of 426 sq mi. Such daunting statistics has most tourists believing that it’s difficult to get around such a massive city. Yet, going from place to place in Hong Kong is a breeze. The city has a surplus of transportation options that are fast, scenic and historic.

Tracks

Hong Kong has a variety of transportation options that run on tracks. First of all, there are the double-decker trams that cruise around the city like buses on tracks. For those that what to reach higher elevations there is the Peak Tram that leads to Victoria Peak. However, tourists and residents that really want to get around the city and surrounding areas should use the mass transit and light rail systems. Hong Kong’s subway is one of the most advanced in the world. People can get from one end of the city to the other in minutes.

Buses

Like any major city, Hong Kong has an extensive fleet of buses. They travel on all major highways and high traffic streets. Hong Kong’s buses are also very large, taking the idea of a double-decker to new heights.

Ferries

Hong Kong sits on the South China Sea and is full of harbors, bays and inlets allowing people to travel by water. Taking people to and fro by water are Hong Kong’s ferries. The ferries provide very scenic views of the city from the water, especially in the evenings as the whole city lights up.

Rickshaw

Although not as prevalent as they once were, rickshaws can still occasionally be seen zipping through congested traffic. They are more or less for tourists, but still offer an exciting ride and a way to get a look at Hong Kong close up. Tourists will feel like they are in another century when bumping up and down on these two-wheeled taxis.

For a city of its size, Hong Kong has ample transportation that will take people anywhere they want to go.
